Spindrift first got together at a warehouse jam session in northwest Rochester during the summer of 2004, where the group struck its first notes. Members Brandon Messmer, Mike Gravenish, and Chris Schneider, all brought something unique to the table. Each of the three had played in a number of area bands, and had gained a wide spectrum of musical experience over the past 15 years. For this beginning, an array of musical styles began fusing together, from modern, classic, and progressive rock, to blues and jazz.

Soon the trio began performing publicly and immediately created a buzz on the local music scene. Spindrift emerged with a number staple cover tunes, anchored by artists such as Jack Johnson, Arc Angels, The Chili Peppers, and Sublime. The band became (and still is known) for creating its own versions of cover tunes, often adding extended “jams” or break down parts. A number of these songs have never been performed exactly the same.

Eventually the band cut a 5 song demo CD, Fresh Tunes. It included 3 original tracks and 2 cover tunes. Spindrift continued to gain momentum, which led up to the group’s debut full-length CD, Drive. Released in the fall of 2006, Drive was a compilation of 10 original songs. Drive brought the group to a new plateau, as it’s identify with original music became more prevalent.

Three years after the release of Drive, Spindrift continues to expand its stylistic influences and range of songs, including original compositions. Set lists often included classics such as ZZ Top and Mellencamp, as well as favorites from Switchfoot and Foo Fighters. During this period, Brandon, Mike, and Chris, discussed the possible dimension that a fourth member could bring to the band. By this time it was clear the three had established a great working chemistry - musically, creatively, as well as in friendship. Expectations would be high for a fourth member.

After jamming with a handful of guitar players and one keyboard player, a longtime Spindrift supporter introduced saxophone player Brett Pauley. Brett seemed to immediately fit in (as the band’s appetite for Dave Matthews Band tunes had grown over time). Brett brought to the band a wealth of horn playing experience, with jazz, swing, and rock at the forefront.

The group continues to grow today, exploring the integration of the saxophone into existing cover and original songs. New ground is consistently explored with Spindrift as a four piece band. It continually stretches its creativity and musical foundations, to bring audiences a unique experience.
